Southwest Carpenters' Trust Buena Park Training Center Welcomes Ocean View High School Students

On March 28, 2023, Ocean View High School students from instructor Jimmy Welker's Construction program in the Huntington Beach Union High School District had the opportunity to visit the Buena Park Training Center, part of the Southwest Carpenters Training Fund. The center, located in Buena Park, California, is a facility dedicated to providing the highest level of training and lifelong learning opportunities for members of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters union.

A group of 20 construction students were given a tour of the facility by Senior Coordinator Thomas Rodriguez, who guided them through classrooms and showcased the large scale training facilities available for apprentices. Rodriguez explained the structure of the apprentice program, including the pay scale, various job opportunities, and the potential for a lifelong career within the union.

The visit was organized by 2CPR Group, Matt Dunphy, a coordinator at the facility, and Jeffrey Scott, an Outreach Specialist for the Southwest Mountain States Regional Council of Carpenters. This collaboration aimed to give students a first-hand look at the opportunities and benefits of pursuing a career in the construction industry through union membership.

Sean Glumace, Co-Founder of 2CPR Group, shared his thoughts on the field trip and its impact on the students: "This field trip offered invaluable exposure to the construction industry and the opportunities provided by the Southwest Carpenters Training Fund. Our aim is to empower students to make informed decisions about their futures, and by partnering with organizations like the Training Fund, we're helping to shape the next generation of skilled professionals."

Marilyn Cunneen, Huntington Beach Union High School District CTE Facilitator, also expressed the importance of these field trips for students and teachers alike: "Field trips like this one to the Buena Park Training Center play a crucial role in connecting classroom learning to real-world experiences. They not only inspire students by exposing them to various career opportunities, but also help teachers better understand the skills and knowledge needed in the industry, ultimately leading to more effective instruction."

Established in 1958, the Southwest Carpenters Training Fund is committed to meeting the training needs of both its union members and participating employers. By continually developing their curriculum, the organization ensures that journey workers can advance in their chosen fields and adapt to new and emerging technologies. The Training Fund also partners with local education agencies to guarantee a highly professional approach to training, while instructors foster the work ethics and values that create highly skilled and productive workers.

The visit to the Buena Park Training Center offered Ocean View High School students a valuable opportunity to explore potential career paths in the construction industry. By learning about the apprentice program, pay scale, and job prospects, students can make informed decisions about their future and capitalize on the resources provided by organizations like the Southwest Carpenters Training Fund.
