Samsung Empowers High School Teachers Through Hands-on Professional Development at Executive Briefing Center

Educators from Downey Unified School District, Huntington Beach Union High School District, and ABC Unified School District come together for a transformative day of learning.

Irvine, CA - On March 21st, 2023, Samsung Electronics America, in collaboration with 2CPR Group and participating school districts, hosted a unique professional development day at their Executive Briefing Center in Irvine, CA. The event was designed specifically for high school Career Technical Education instructors from Downey Unified School District, Huntington Beach Union High School District, and ABC Unified School District. Jenny Shull, Senior Key Account Manager - Education for Samsung, and Dr. Micah Shippee, Director of Education Technology Consulting and Solutions at Samsung, helped coordinate the day's activities, which aimed to empower educators with the tools and strategies necessary to prepare their students for the future.

The day began with a warm welcome and an informative tour of the Executive Briefing Center, providing participants with insights into Samsung's latest technology innovations. Following the tour, teachers were divided into two groups, with each group participating in one of the two hands-on sessions led by Dee Lanier and Rachel Swanson from the Samsung Education Technology Consulting and Solutions Team.

The first session, titled "Design Thinking Workshop," focused on teaching critical thinking, empathy, and creativity to students in order to prepare them for an uncertain future. Through a series of hands-on activities, educators engaged in empathetic problem solving and reflected on how their experiences could inform their classroom practices.

One instructor expressed their enthusiasm, saying, "This is a better approach to problem solving. I love the apps and I really want to incorporate this screen technology into my classroom!"

After the first session, attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by Samsung, which featured a selection of salads and sandwiches from Mendocino Farms. During this time, participants also had the opportunity to network with Samsung representatives, try out the technology at the center, and discuss the morning's activities with fellow educators.

Following lunch, the groups switched sessions, allowing each teacher to experience both workshops throughout the day. The second session was titled "Solving Global Goals using Solve in Time!" and introduced the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The session employed a gamified design thinking activity using a unique deck of cards. This fast-paced session allowed participants to creatively explore potential solutions to global challenges and share their ideas in small groups.

Another instructor shared their thoughts, saying, "It's amazing to see how technology can be so beneficial and to witness the incredible changes it has undergone. I absolutely loved the interactive screens!"

Angela Allison, Co-Founder of 2CPR Group, shared her thoughts on the event, stating, "Samsung's commitment to providing industry-leading professional development for CTE teachers is commendable. Their collaboration with us and the participating districts has created a powerful learning experience for educators, ultimately benefiting their students' futures."

This professional development day provided a valuable opportunity for high school educators to collaborate, learn, and grow. The hands-on sessions, led by experienced professionals, encouraged the development of innovative approaches to teaching and learning, equipping high school teachers with the skills to prepare their students for the challenges of the future.
