Westminster High Students Explore Industry Opportunities at the Southwest Carpenters Buena Park Training Center

On May 3, 2023, a group of industrious students from Westminster High School had the unique opportunity to delve into the world of professional carpentry and construction at the Southwest Carpenters Buena Park Training Center. Guided by their instructor, Greg Berger, these students stepped away from the traditional classroom setting to experience firsthand where the real work happens in the construction industry.

Jeffrey Scott, Outreach Specialist for the Southwest Mountain States Regional Council of Carpenters, led the tour, providing a comprehensive overview of the facility's training areas and cutting-edge resources. The students witnessed firsthand the training environments where apprentices develop their skills, learning about the various stages of carpentry from foundational techniques to advanced construction technologies.

During their visit, the students were exposed to different aspects of the construction industry, gaining insights into the structure of apprenticeship programs, the evolution of carpentry techniques, and the critical role of skilled labor in building infrastructure. They also learned about the job opportunities available within the industry, the benefits of union membership, and the pathways to securing a stable, rewarding career in carpentry.

One student, reflecting on the experience, shared, "This opened up my eyes to all of the different careers in the union." This sentiment captures the essence of the visit's impact, illustrating the broadening perspectives among the students.

Angela Allison, CEO of 2CPR Group, emphasized the importance of such educational visits: "Getting students out into the field to see places like the Southwest Carpenters Buena Park Training Center is invaluable. It not only opens their eyes to the realities and possibilities within the construction industry but also sparks interest in professions they might not have previously considered. Our aim is to provide them with a broad perspective, helping them to see the variety of options available and encourage them to pursue fulfilling careers."

The Southwest Carpenters Training Fund, established in 1958, is dedicated to providing top-tier education and training to its members, ensuring that they are well-equipped to meet the demands of the industry and excel in their craft. By collaborating with local schools like Westminster High, the Fund not only enriches the students' educational experiences but also strengthens the future workforce.

This visit to the Southwest Carpenters Buena Park Training Center offered the Westminster High students a valuable glimpse into potential career paths in construction and carpentry. By engaging directly with the training processes and learning about the apprentice program, pay scales, and job prospects, these students are better prepared to make informed decisions about their futures in this dynamic field.
